Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you about Push to Walk!
As the Founder of Push to Walk, I would like to introduce our nonprofit organization to you, as I feel that your role in the NJ Health Care Network would benefit from knowing who we are and what we do.
Push to Walk was founded in 2007 after my son, Darren, dove into shallow water and broke his neck at the C5 level, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. At age 18, this was a devastating injury to Darren and to our whole family. While it seems cliché, life did change in an instant.
After Darren completed both in-patient and out-patient therapy, he was looking for a way to get stronger, regain function and live as independently as possible. While he is still challenged by these same goals today, he does live a full, productive and happy life. He completed both undergraduate and graduate degrees, works full-time, was married in February 2018 and just bought his first house with his wife. Darren continues to exercise at Push to Walk, and credits his workouts with his abilities to live independently and do much on his own.
Push to Walk is a nonprofit organization that provides specializes exercise workouts to people with paralysis. Whether the paralysis is a result of a spinal cord injury like Darren’s, a brain injury, MS, a stroke, Cerebral Palsy or some other neurological condition, the one-on-one individualized workouts that are provided by specialized trainers help people reach their goals of staying health and well, improving their balance and gait, and living as independently as possible.
Push to Walk is located in Oakland, NJ (Bergen County) and easily accessible from major highways and roadways. We have a complete application process for people to follow, offer a free evaluation, and schedule customized workouts to fit everyone’s needs for setting and reaching goals, scheduling, transportation and financial situations. Exercise workouts are billed on an hourly basis, and do not generally qualify for insurance payment or reimbursement. However, Worker’s Comp coverage can usually be used to pay the costs. We also offer a Scholarship Fund to help those with financial challenges and offer assistance in fund raising to help our clients help themselves.
Our specialized staff has been trained to work with people who have paralysis, and have finished with physical and occupational therapy (although there is sometimes overlap). Trainers are not Physical Therapists, but do have at least an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science or a related field, receive extensive training from Push to Walk and also attend initial and on-going education courses and relevant conferences.
In addition to the physical benefits our clients enjoy from their workouts, the social atmosphere, camaraderie and activities are all very important to a client’s well-being. These benefits often extend to the family members, friends and loved ones, too. For that reason, Push to Walk is definitely a family and families take care of each other.
Part of my reason in writing to you today is that you know who Push to Walk is and you can offer us as a resource to your patients, clients and family members. I also invite you to visit our gym and see our program in action for yourself. I would love to set up a time that is convenient for you (and anyone else you’d like to include) to visit!
