Georgian Court University will open their doors of “the Mansion” for the August meeting of NJHCNET!

“The Mansion” located on the former summer estate of millionaire George Jay Gould I, son of the railroad tycoon Jay Gould (1836–1892), Georgian Court’s 150 acre pastoral campus is recognized as a national historic landmark. Designed by the New York architect, Bruce Price, the estate features three beautiful gardens, the Italian Gardens, the Sunken Garden, and Takeo Shiota’s Formal Garden. Much of the original architecture exists today, including the Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum, an original wooden bowling alley, the Apollo Fountain, and one of only 45 “court tennis” courts in existence in the United States. The mansion is the main house on the estate, in which the family resided. It’s ornate interior has been preserved, including formal dining rooms, chapel, and great hall.
